The Role of Konza Technopolis as an Innovation Space in Building an International Centre for Innovation 

Konza Technopolis is leading Kenya’s transformation into a global innovation hub. As a flagship smart city and Special Economic Zone (SEZ), it integrates technology, research, and entrepreneurship to drive economic growth and tech advancement. With strong fiscal incentives, Konza supports startups and international collaborations. It hosts a Technology Innovation Support Centre (TISC) in partnership with WIPO, offering access to intellectual property and scientific resources. The Tier 3 Data Centre, Startup Launch Pad, and UNDP’s Timbuktoo Green Tech Hub provide incubation, acceleration, and co-working spaces, positioning Konza as a key African startup ecosystem. Its Experience Centre promotes technological engagement, while IASP membership ensures alignment with global standards. This paper examines Konza’s role in fostering innovation, IP commercialization, and sustainable development, drawing lessons from global smart cities like Songdo, 22@ Barcelona, Dubai Internet City, and Singapore’s One-North to guide its growth through policy, infrastructure, and research partnerships.
